Only thirty 'Ulsters' were built by the factory, ten of which were team cars and given the 'LM' prefix to their chassis numbers (LM11-LM21). They were the most successful of the Aston Martin factory racers with the highest place at Le Mans being 3rd. in 1935 (LM20) and winners of the Rudge Whitworth Cup. They also competed at the Tourist Trophy, Mille Miglia, Targa Abruzzi and were frequently seen at Brooklands and Donington. They were pure sports cars having been developed and driven by Bertelli himself, the Ulster is the culmination of over ten years of continuous racing experience. Very few sports cars can boast the pedigree of the Aston Martin 'Ulster'.
This car is one of four 2/4 seater 'Ulsters' built by the factory in 1935. Only two of these cars have survived in their original form. Of the four, one has been converted into a 2 seater, one has a 2 litre engine and the other is owned by the Aston Martin Owners Club.
Sold 'ex.works' directly by the factory to A.R. Phipps, who raced the car over a two year period, both at Brooklands and Donnington. In 1936 Phipps fitted a supercharger and entered the car at the 24 hour race at Spa. However it did not appear and Phipps sold the Ulster to buy a Speed model soon after.
In 1951 this Ulster, along with two others and a Le Mans entered the Bol d'Or at Montlhery as part of an AMOC team of enthusiasts, where it came 11th. overall and 6th. in class, against a grid much more modern machinery.
In 1954 it became the property of Bill Burton, who raced the car very enthusiastically for over 20 years, with many 1st. and 2nd. placed results including winning the St. John Horsfall Trophy in 1974.
In 1998 the car was completely rebuilt by a well known restorer and was later sold to a newspaper magnate. The present owner has had the car since 2002 and had the engine rebuilt by Ecurie Bertelli Ltd.in 2004, to full racing specification including a new steel crankshaft and steel conrods, all on shell bearings. The car has been used in AMOC club events both on the racetrack and in club rallies. It has proven to be both powerful (100BHP) and reliable.
Sold with current FIVA papers (the new owner will have to re-apply) this historic Aston Martin is race and rally ready and could be entered for the Le Mans Classic or the Mille Miglia, both of which events it is ideally suited and eligible.
