1928 Sports Model TS10

£POA

Shortly after Aston Martin was purchased by Renwick and Bertelli, the initial concept was to continue with production of a high quality touring car. A completely new motor car was designed from scratch; enter the ‘T type’. To boost rather low sales, the pair decided to switch their focus to race and sports cars instead, and the more popular 'S type' was born.

TS10 is a unique vehicle, believed to be a hybrid of these two early models. It was the tenth vehicle produced in the new Feltham workshops and was displayed at the 1928 Olympia Motor Show. There it was purchased by the Maharajah of Patiala, who like many similar wealthy Indian gentlemen, had a penchant for high quality British vehicles. He had it exported straight to India, and there the body work was removed and the ash frame replaced with mahogany or teak so as to withstand attack from wood-eating insects. The body was then refitted and the vehicle saw regular use. Unlike other all other Sports Models, TS10 had a wet sump rather than dry, possibly at the request of the Maharajah.

Years passed and the vehicle remained in India but changed hands. Its history during this time is rather scant, other than a sale in 1967. But then in the late 1990s it was discovered in an Indian orchard in a sorry and incomplete state. What remained had been greatly modified and many of the original components were lost.

What remained comprised only the chassis, some of the body panels, the original wheels and tyres, and the axles - one of which was not the correct type. Restoration from this condition seemed impossible.

The then owner had it transported to Ecurie Bertelli in the UK in 2006. Over a three year period the vehicle was underwent a rebuild to exact and original specifications. A T-type engine was found and built up, the rear axle and gear box were completely rebuilt and the remaining last known and correct wet sump was sourced and fitted. Unusually, it has front-opening doors which is the original design but not what was commonly found in the era. The colour scheme is also believed to be the original.

TS10 has a 1.5 Litre, overhead cam engine with twin 1" SU side draft carburettors. It has a 4-speed gearbox with straight-cut gears and a worm drive rear axle. It is aluminium bodied on an ash frame, is fitted with 21" wire wheels and drum brakes.

It is now in full working order having only covered test miles since the full Ecurie Bertelli restoration and is on display in our showroom. Further details can be obtained by telephoning Robert Blakemore at our office. A test drive is highly recommended.
