B4/401/S was only the second Mk II built, constructed alongside the first two Ulster-based Team Cars and the now well-known Mk II, B4/402/S, on which Ecurie Bertelli carried out a meticulous conservation. The latter won the Historic Motoring Awards Car of the Year and was the basis for an incredible pair of articles in the world-renowned Octane magazine. The Mk II was the pinnacle of the 1½ litre Aston-Martin development and the refinements make it an extremely attractive car to own and use.
This car was first owned by a Miss Bean, who competed in it at Brooklands in 1935 in a LCC race before taking part in the 1937 RAC Rally. More recently this car has been in very long-term ownership in the UK which has assisted in it remaining substantially correct, original and with ‘matching numbers’. It has been restored and, cosmetically, is in good condition with gentle patina. Mechanically, it needs significant but completely manageable work which, once completed, will result in a swift and reliable car perfectly suited to a variety of uses. The suggested price reflects the condition of this car.
Introduced in 1934, the Mk II was Aston-Martin’s replacement for the Le Mans model. It sported a new stronger chassis and an improved engine with counter-balanced crankshaft. Originally available in either short or long wheelbase versions - the shorter version being virtually mechanically identical to the famous Ulster racing car, one of which came 3rd overall at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1935. A number of Mk II cars, including this one, competed in period and the competition lineage can be clearly seen making it an extremely capable and fast car, suitable for rally, touring and even racing events.
